About the Toy drive & Fundraiser

In 2013, I had the opportunity to lead service trips in the marginalized communities of Haitian sugar cane cutters in the Dominican Republic, "batey". I noticed that, although the children were living in poverty, they always found creative ways to play. I started the toy drive and holiday celebration last year to help encourage and foster their creativity, because rich or poor, all children deserve to play!

~Daphney~

Join us in collecting toys and raising funds to bring a smile to these already happy children. Toys and funds will go towards our holiday celebration in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

About The Joumou Fund

We're service based, social justice organization. We work with established local organizations to help alleviate poverty, create unity, and uplift communities of the African diaspora. Front and center in all of our initiatives is exploring issues of identity and belonging.

Soup joumou ("joo-moo") is the soup of Independence and remembrance that celebrates the new year for Haitians. It commemorates January 1, 1804, the date of Haiti's independence from France. The soup was once a delicacy reserved for white masters but forbidden to the slaves who cooked it. After Independence, Haitians took to eating it to celebrate the world's first and only successful slave revolution resulting in an independent nation.

While unique to the history of Haiti, we believe it's a symbol for unity and strenght for all those in the diaspora.
